It has been a while since the last pugs gathering. Bubbly was excited as usual and yess...it was a terrific time. She managed to meet up with some old buddies such as Hugo, Oscar and Snigger. At the same time, there were new friends..woo hoo...

The Many Faces Of Confi

To many, the image that comes to mind when rottweiler is mentioned is usually not a good one. Most people perceive rottweilers as fierce and crazy, and they are to be avoided at all cost.

Of course, as a rottweiler owners, we do not share the same sentiment. To us, Confi is simply playful and her desires are her food, toy and attention from the master...:)

Let me say this...I'm not a fan of bougainvilleas. The main reason is probably they are found almost everywhere in my neighborhood.

Yes, bougainvilleas are perhaps one of the most popular and widely grown tropical vines.

When we first got them (2 pots), we put them in partial shade at our patio. One of them did not get that much sunlight and was only blooming with... leaves! So, we decided to change the location...

With full sun, the results are amazing...

Leaves - where are they? Indeed, bougainvilleas thrive on full sun.

If you like flowers in your house but can't afford the time, this is the best plant to go for. Almost pest-free and not a water-freak...:)

New Flowers: Three Months and Angelonia

We were visiting some nurseries last weekend, supposedly to buy some fertilizers for our roses but ended up with our car brimming with flowers instead. These flowers are simply way too gorgeous not to own them. Alright, blame it on our impulsive instinct...:)

This is called "pokok bunga tiga bulan", translated as Three Months. Odd name, I know. I checked out wikipedia. Apparently, it is a tree species flower Hydrangea originated from Japan. And I discovered a little fact: the color of the flowers can vary from white to a range of blue to purple to pink, depending on the pH of the soil. How interesting, eh?

And this is called Angelonia (nope, it's not named after Angelina Jolie). It was said the flowers need warm temperatures and large amount of sunlight. Well, we do have lots of that, don't we?

Now, the challenge is to ensure they survive...:) Ah...I so like gardening!

A pug has many expressions. They can look depressing one minute and the very next, radiant and happy. Some of our friends say pugs are so ugly, "Of all dogs, why rear a pug with that wrinkled ugly face?" Obviously, one man's meat is another man's poison. For us, Bubbly is adorably ugly.

Vinca Attacked By Caterpillars

Vinca or Periwinkle is one of the most common plants you can find in local nurseries. The plants are grown for its glossy and green foliage as well as its variety color of flowers.

We do not have many vinca now because most of them bought earlier were attacked by caterpillars. A pot of vinca can be gone in one night, that’s how ferociously hungry these caterpillars can be.

This one(below) was the only survivor although we read propagation is rather easy. Well, probably vinca wasn’t my top favorite, so, I didn’t really bother. But last week, we almost lost this too.

Yes, the caterpillars were back, almost with a vengeance....LOL

Luckily, we were quick to spot them this time.

We killed those that we can see with our physical eyes but to be safe, nothing beats prescribing some garden voodoo aka pest control...:)

Do They Really Bring In The Money?

Money plant (scientific name: Epipremnum aurem) is the most common plant found in homes because it is the easiest to plant. It’s so hardy – you can literally leave it alone and the fella will still survive. They can be propagated easily, by stem or leaf cuttings.

It was said money plant is bringer of fortune. The myth has it that if you keep money plant at home and can keep it in bloom, good fortune will be flowing continuously into the household. Oh, I want to believe that! Hahaa…

Anyway, this is what I did to one of my money plants. I let it circle a table lamp. Ok, I'm putting this up here for my future consumption. Believe me, this blog is probably all about that...:)

Japanese Koi

We do not have a Japanese garden. But we have a garden pond with Japanese koi. Koi fish are a form of carp fish originally from Japan. They are very similar to goldfish though. At first, we had nineteen but as time goes by, we noticed they are growing in size rapidly. Not only that, they are big eaters as well. Err…are we spending too much on fish food? So, with a bit of hesitation, we decided to give away 8 of them. Lucky neighbors...:)

We are not koi experts. Besides a few kohakus and an asagi, the rest are not of premium breeds. To a non-koi expert, it doesn’t matter. All of them are equally unique and beautiful. But as times goes by, we all tend to have our favorites.

As they swim all the time, they give the pond a “sense of life”. It’s a great therapy for the eyes, that’s for sure….:D

Japanese Roses

We have this flower bed, measuring 4 x 2.5 feet which we had explored planting with all sorts of flowers in the past 2.5 years. Zinnias, vincas, lantanas, melapodiums, to name a few...but with not much of success. This was an old picture, took about 1.5 years ago when we had zinnias.

At first, they were blooming so well but soon they became a wild bush. They usually do that when they are shouting for attention. Obviously, we did not shower enough of that...:)

So, about 6 weeks ago, I said, "let's try something else again". In a way, this is the part I like most, exploring new flowers.

So, taa-tah...japanese roses.

I hope they'll last for a while this time, though I don't mind trying out other species...:)

By the way, thanks to Desmond for being the first follower of our blog...:D

c) Mini roses

e) Impatiens

d) Honestly, I've no idea what this is called. But can't blame me because I did not plant it. It popped up out of no where. The delight I had when I discovered these lovely blooms one morning. Well, someone told me it's related to Japanese roses. I need to verify...

Due to Bubbly eye's incident not long ago, we tried our best to separate them as much as possible.

But we think it's time to have some fun again...But, under watchful eyes.

We had kept ourselves rather busy since the beginning of the year and without us realizing, our two frens had grown bigger by the day. And you guess it right...one of them continues to grow and has not reach her peak size yet.

Confi, The Working Dog

It was said Rottweilers are from the breed of working dog probably descended from the herding dogs used by the Romans and they used Rottweilers to guard their army camps as well as to drive their cattle.

Now, living in an urban area, no cattle to drive of course, but work around the house is required now and then such as clearing weeds, chopping branches or even assembling a garden bench.

Let’s try out our dear Confi and see whether she’s up to the task or not.

Walk...walk...walk....The Dogs Walk Us

Some exercise for the dogs are always advisable. So, as much as possible, we'll take the two fellas for short walks either in the morning or evening. Sometimes due to time constraint, we even took them out late at night if the sky is clear and the air is cool. Bubbly is the more exciting one and she'll be running instead of walking. So, at the end, instead of walking the dog, she walked us. And both the walker and "walkee" will be panting for breath...

As we realized some time ago, it's not just about walking, it's about checking out the trees, leaves, rubbish and what not along the way...

While we took Bubbly and Confi for a walk in the morning, Hugo was whining at home. We wished we could bring all three but just not possible. Bad luck, Hugo.

No. We don't treat our guest like that. In the evening when the rain stops and the weather was a bit more cooling, Hugo got his chance.

Yippie...I'm going for a walk, master Bryan! Did you hear that?

You think all pugs walk the same pace? Think again! While Bubbly was charging ahead pulling you along, Hugo is slow and steady. Walking with Hugo is so pleasant.

You've got so much to learn from Hugo, girl.

First Christmas

It's Christmas Day! And it's the FIRST for Bubbly and Confi...as well as Hugo.

We have a party in the evening and invited family members and close friends.

Bubbly, the most excited among the lot wanted to dress up for the occasion.

A Visitor For Christmas...Welcome, Hugo!

The first time we set our eyes on Hugo.....OMG, he's...BIG!

And later, when we were told that he's one month younger than Bubbly, we then exclaimed...then he's really FAT! Hahaha...No, he's just chubby...

Bryan, his owner is away and for the first time, we were asked to dog-sit. Yeah...first time! Sorry, Bryan if you are starting to regret tis...

But hey, Hugo is adapting himself pretty well....we brought him to our garden and he instantly like it...(eh..Bryan, you must have been depriving him of tis luxury...:)) - he was running, chasing after toys, rolling and etc...

...even doing his business...yeah, that's how easy he's adapting to his new environment.

Taa-daahh... of course, we have to introduce him to the other members of the household...first off, Confi.

We were a bit hesitant to get three of them together...but what the heck? C'mon Bly, join in the fun...

To The Vet...Again!

We've been in and out of the vet clinic in the past one month more times than any other months in the year combined. Tis time, what's the problem? It's Confi - she got lesions on her skin. How did she get it? We really have no idea.

A trip to Urban Paws again. Oh yes, she's so used to the car environment that tis time without a cautious eye, a compartment cover was slightly destroyed by her sharp teeth. Ouch!

Familiar place, Confi?

Doctor prescribed a 10-day course of antibiotic tis time. On top of that, Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Let's hope she'll be better in no time...:)

Almost 2 weeks had passed since Bubbly and Confi had their fights/play together. When not together, that doesn't mean no fights...doesn't mean the fun has to stop. The fighting instinct lives on...

The only change is...the target enemy. For instance, Bubbly has chosen the pillow. Oh, poor pillow...

No challenge, tis one. It doesn't fight back..

Confi Almost Drown?

Our house has a small pond with koi. Everyone likes to hang out nearby including our dear Confi and Bubbly.

Confi being the curious one was always found sniffing away - "How is it feel like to be like them - living under the water? And how come they never come up and say hi?"

Well, it doesn't take long for Confi to find out. Due to the rain last nite, the floor was rather slippery tis morning. Our fren happened to do her "meditation" again by the pond.

And oooopss...down she went. Splash...splash...No shout, no whimpering, just the noise of water splashing...was she too shocked to do anything? We guess so.

If we did not happen to be nearby, we can't imagine the outcome...but wait a minute, "Can't Rotties swim?" We're sure they can but Confi is still a puppy, so, we're really not sure.

We rushed to pick her up and managed to get a few quick shots too. It was a commotion...really.. Cos' Bubbly also managed to escape (they were supposed to be separated for the time being) and join the "rescue crew" or so we thot.

OMG, it's freaking cold...tis is no fun at all!

The Princess’s Pet

Long ago in China, a small princess lived in a large palace. Her father, the emperor, allowed his daughter no playmates, thinking they would distract her from her royal training. The girl’s nursemaid took pity and smuggled in a tiny dog to keep her company.

The princess was delighted, and named him Peach Flower. Even when the two friends were not playing, she kept him bound tight in the sleeve of her robe, so that he father would not discover him.

She even slept with him that way. One day when the princess was in the garden with the emperor, a sound of snoring broke the quiet of the morning, and Peach Flower was pulled out of his hiding place. Upon seeing the dog, the Emperor exclaimed, “Little lion, are you a prince in disguise?"

Far from being angry, he was enchanted by her pet’s looks, for, from riding so long in the tight space of her sleeve, his sweet face had been squashed into a wonder of wrinkles. From then on, the three folds of skin on the Pug’s forehead were said to look like the Chinese character for “prince”.

Full Recovery In 5 Days

Confi tagged along and she's adapting to traveling in a car pretty quickly.

We used to say that Bubbly is hyper-active in the past and how we wished she would exhibit her pug standard traits out soon- laid back, lazy and quiet. Now, we regret we had wished for that too soon...

Is Bubbly Better?

From crate to toilet to… wet kitchen. Yes, Bubbly’s roaming space is getting bigger. We’ve a sneaky feeling that the day will come (soon, we think) when she has the whole house to herself...hmmnn...

Why wet kitchen now? It’s because the toilet lack sunlight and we felt it may be of help to her eye if she has some (not too much) sunlight when we are away. Amateurs like us just have to try everything, don’t we? Or perhaps, it’s a psychological issue - some sunlight may cheer her up Or it’s purely a matter of conscience – …oh you poor little fella...anything to make you happy, sweetie...

Well, whatever it is…we’re pleased with the plan.

A good change should bring positive results, rite? So we thought till tis morning, out of the blue, she vomited twice. Exactly why? We don’t know… we're sure the sunlight did not caused that.

She is still as active, though not as hyper as before she caught corneal ulcer.

Of course, Confi is still puzzled... Hey, what exactly is happening here? Why are you on quarantine...did you get H1N1 or what?

The Roses Are Not Budding

We've been applying medication on Bubbly's left eye for 3 days now.

The results - slight improvement, that's all we can say. We're hoping for quicker recovery but it seems that's not the case.

Keeping our fingers crossed that she's better before her next follow-up appointment with Dr. Dom tis Saturday.

Her face has been sombre the past few days - we missed her tongue hanging out from her mouth. Our only comfort is that she eats and poos like normal.

Of course, Confi misses her friend or rather, their fights...

How are you feeling, darling? Silence...

Now, do we need to ask why the roses are not budding these days?...:(

Rottweiler Dog Show

MKA organized a Rottweiler Specialty Show today at Yok Bin Secondary School, Melaka. More than 40 dogs participated in this dog show. What is a dog show, anyway? Simply put, it’s a beauty contest for dogs. Cool, eh? In actual sense, it’s a show that judge the dog on how well it’s physical traits and temperament meet the breed standard.

There is only one judge and his word is final. Mr Fernando Lucas Martins is from Portugal and he has been a Rottweiler breeder for the past 27 years. Well, with that kind of background, no one dare to challenge his decision - so if he said dog A is the champion, we better said, "Aye" to that...

The main casts... check out their beautiful silky furs.

Marks are given not based on the first look alone. Close examination is required. For example, teeth must be even - one missing tooth would disqualify a participant.

You also need to show that you can run...and run like a real dog. "Run doggie...run..."

Who's the winner? Let's say its not the easiest decision to make...

Took a good look at Confi when we reached home. "Ready to sign up for beauty contest next year, Fi?"

What happened to Bubbly's left eye?

What happened to your left eye, Bly?

We skimmed through some pug books and prepared for the worst. Eye disease is a common problem among pugs but we hate the idea that Bubbly is already infected with one at this tender age.

Can’t wait for the night to be over. We called the Urbans Paws tis morning and quickly made an appointment.

Pack our things and off we go.

“Going in a crate…hey, are we going to meet those frens again?” (the pug gathering)

Confi is coming along too as her second vaccination is due today.

Enjoying your ride? Absolutely.

Waiting for their names to be called at the veterinary clinic.

Dr. Dom L. Agas diagnosed that Bubbly has corneal ulcer, an inflammatory condition of the cornea involving loss of its outer layer.

“It’s common for dogs. Topical medications are generally effective in curing the problem. More than 90% chances of healing.” He went on to explain about surgery if no improvement within the next 2 days, but his first reply was what we wanted to hear. Whew! “Yeah…Bly…did you hear that or not…you’ll be alright, darling…”

But strict orders were given by Dr. Dom – no playing together for a while till things get better… ya see, we discovered that both Confi and Bubbly have also been infected with skin problems, apparently due to bacterial infection. They have to be on a 5-day antibiotic course. A tinge of regret…perhaps we should not have allowed them to play together in the first place – was that the cause? Dr. Dom said probably but bacterial infection can be caught anytime anywhere too.…more like a word of consolation to the owners…hmmnnn…

“Ok, no more playing together, both of you. Did you hear that?” They are to be separated at all times, at all costs…

“Why are they doing tis to us? Why? Why? Tell me why?”

“Oh, how we miss the good old days?”

The Sun Goes Down But....

When both adults need to work, the dogs suffer. For 9 hours and sometimes more, they are in their loyal spot waiting for the time to pass them by. So they waited...and waited...and waited.

Finally, a familiar noise... Dogs are very good in their hearing...even before we open the front door, they know its us. Yeah, they're home!!

The past few days were pretty wet but how can we resist not to let them out and play together. For tis is the moment they have been waiting for the whole day.

So once the rain has stopped and the sun has long gone to sleep, the play must go on...like any other day. And they will cherish every moment for they know the time is short.

They fight, they bond, they cuddle, they tease... to us, they jus can't get enough of each other.

Yeah...Bubbly and Confi has slowly become great buddies...:)

Hachiko A Dog Story.

It’s a movie based on a true story of a Japanese professor and his dog: it’s the tale of a dog’s life – long devotion to his owner. The film is starring Richard Gere in the lead role.

I think it’s already released in Japan but going to be released in USA by end of 2009 or early 2010. Not too sure whether Malaysia cinemas are screening this movie or not.

10 Minutes In Confi's House

Confi's house is outside, at the back of our garden. On her second day, we tried to let her sleep in her house on her own - a huge mistake cos' she was crying the whole night.

We asked Rottweiler.Net for some advice. Of course, many suggested we should let her sleep in the house, preferably in our bedroom. Errr...we're not that keen on the idea and decided to do some experiments ourselves.

Tis is what Joshua did - he sat next to Confi inside her house for 10 minutes before her bedtime. When she was about to sleep, he slipped away quietly. It was a success...she slept through the night. Now, every night we applied the same routine.

Tis morning the fella was whimpering again because we cut short her play time and get her to eat her food inside her house. That wud not do..."I want to be with you guys..."

So Joshua did his quiet time in the dog house...:D

First Heat For Bubbly

It was a mess...blood stains everywhere. It's not a surprise to us as we were expecting her first heat since a month ago. But when it happened, we dread it...yucks...so much to clean up!

But thanks to recommendation from frens in the Malaysia Pug Club, we managed to get hold a pair of doggie panties for her from a nearby pet shop. We were literally LOL when we put it(summore with panty liner inside) on her just now - can't believe we're actually doing tis..:D Oh well, there's always a first in everything, eh.

Now, everyone are happy - we don't have to worry about her messing with our rugs and furniture and she gets to roam and play anywhere she wants...

"Happy, Bly?"

Hmmnnn...this may last anywhere between 7 and 21 days. And we have to be careful when we take Bubbly for her routine walks - no contact with any dog!

Now, that sets us thinking whether we should spay her or not later. We have not decided what to do yet.

Bubbly's Toilet

We used to put Bubbly inside a crate when we're away for work. But as she grows bigger, we realized there's no room for her to roam. So, we decided to convert our toilet on the ground floor to her house so that she can stay inside the toilet when we're away. At night, she has a bigger space - the whole of the dry kitchen to roam and sleep now...

So, to all our dear frens, this is a notice to you - when you next pay us a visit, you have to go upstairs to use the bathroom d....:)

Is it mere coincidence or is tis the season of getting new puppies?

Our two good frens ....Melissa and the Choi family (Sarah cuddling Teddy on the right) got their toy poodles on the same day - gosh, the two of them look like twins - same color and same size too.

Aren't they cute?

Really wanted a poodle too...ooopss...correction, only Sinsee wanted a poodle and that's a good reason for it. Got this from Wikipedia on dogs intelligence. The author used "understanding of new commands" and "obey first command" as his standards of intelligence. He surveyed dog trainers and compiled this list of dog intelligence.

Since Confi came into our home, our house has turned into a war zone. Its Bubbly vs Confi!

First day - goes to Bubbly!
Second day - goes to Bubbly!
Third day - goes to Bubbly!
Today - ermm...it almost goes to Confi...

It's crazy with all the fighting going on BUT its so FUN to watch....

Introducing Bubbly and Confi

This is Bubbly... came to our home at end May 2009 when she was just 3 months old.

Confi is the new housemate, joined our family only on Nov 5th. She is two months old now.
